For 42 years, Stephen Gosling built things you could see: offices, foundations, steel and concrete rising out of Texas soil. A career in commercial construction teaches a man that nothing lasts without a solid foundation. In April 2016 he laid down his hard hat. He did not stop building. He simply changed materials.

Today Gosling builds something more enduring: a deeper understanding of Scripture. A Bible teacher for 25 years, he is the author of We Are All Corinthians: Revised Edition, a devotional that takes one of the most turbulent churches in the New Testament and holds it up like a mirror to the modern believer.

The more we study the church at Corinth, we discover that the lessons reflect many of the timeless characteristics of humanity. Their struggles are our struggles. We truly are all Corinthians. — Rev. Clay Horton

An ancient city, a modern mirror

Corinth was a bustling, cosmopolitan port, wealthy, divided, and full of competing voices. Its young church wrestled with factions, pride, temptation, lawsuits, worship, and love. The Apostle Paul wrote to them with frankness and tenderness, and two of those letters survive as First and Second Corinthians.

Gosling’s insight is simple and powerful: nothing about those struggles is foreign to us. The book’s cover makes the point visually. A sunlit ancient Corinth, with its temple, fountains, and red-tiled roofs, stretches toward a horizon of modern skyscrapers. Two thousand years apart, it is the same city and the same human heart.

Rewritten for the reader, one day at a time

The original edition was structured as a weekly study. Listening closely to his readers, Gosling did something few authors are willing to do: he rewrote the book completely. The Revised Edition, released in November 2023 by HIS Publishing Group of Dallas, Texas, is condensed into an approachable daily format that fits into real life.

The journey begins in Acts 18, the moment Paul first arrives in Corinth, and walks the reader, or as the book prefers, the pilgrim, through the entirety of First and Second Corinthians. After rich background material come 97 daily readings, each built with a builder’s care:

  • Scripture Selection — a carefully chosen passage from Acts or the Epistles.
  • Author Commentary — Gosling’s clear, approachable exegesis and historical context.
  • Great Promises of God — links between the day’s lesson and God’s wider promises across the Bible.
  • Scripture Review — a brief synthesis tying the reading to the book’s central theme.
  • Reflection — a devotional moment for prayer, meditation, and real-world application.

Scholarship without the jargon

Readers and ministry leaders keep returning to the same praise: the research is thorough, but the writing is never heavy. Rev. Clay Horton notes on the book’s back cover that “it is clear he has done extensive research on the Apostle Paul and the Letters to the Corinthians. The exegetic work is thorough and yet very approachable.”

That balance is the gift of a teacher who has spent a quarter-century in the classroom of the local church, explaining the cultural world of first-century Corinth so that a twenty-first-century reader can step right into it. Many readers also praise the new 97-day rhythm as a far more manageable routine for personal devotions.

From the job site to the Gospel of Luke

Gosling’s writing life began in earnest at retirement. A year before leaving construction he had started a study of the Gospel of Luke, and after retiring in 2016 he finished it: To Seek and Save, named for Jesus’ own description of his mission in Luke 19:10. An updated edition of To Seek and Save is set for December 2026, giving readers a second path into his patient, faithful study of Scripture.

At home in Texas

Stephen and his wife, Veronica, live in Texas, have three children between them, and attend Vista Ridge UMC. It is a life rooted in family, congregation, and the Word, the same foundation he invites every reader to build upon.

Their struggles are our struggles. We truly are all Corinthians.
