Looking Through Water (Revised Edition): A Novel
by Bob Rich
A father and son, long estranged, reunite over a fishing competition in the Florida Keys.
It's 1976, and William McKay is at the top of his game — yet something is missing. When his long-absent father calls from the Florida Keys inviting him to a father-son fishing competition, William agrees. Now the basis for a forthcoming film, Looking Through Water chronicles the impact of long-festering pain on a family, and the healing that comes with forgiveness.

A father suddenly calling after being away for years would bring up a lot of questions. I don’t think I’d know how to react either. There’s probably a lot of awkwardness between William and his father before they can even begin talking about forgiveness

I think the hardest part would be deciding whether to forgive someone who has been absent from your life for years. Even if the person is genuinely trying to make things right, that doesn’t erase everything that happened before. I’m interested in seeing how the two characters deal with that

Actually I wasn’t sure what to expect from a story centered around a fishing competition, but the father and son situation seems to be the bigger part of the story. Years of not speaking would make that reunion pretty uncomfortable, especially when there are still things left unsaid
- Judith
I found the relationship between William and his father interesting because there’s clearly a lot that happened before the two of them met again. It made me wonder what actually caused them to become estranged in the first place. I usually like when family stories take their time with those kinds of questions

The ending got me a little. I wasn’t expecting to feel that emotional about it

I wonder what happened between William and his father that kept them apart for so long

A fishing competition is an interesting way to bring a father and son back together
