I can imagine the move being confusing for Knox even if his mom believed it was the right decision. Leaving Hong Kong and suddenly having to adjust to life in California would mean leaving behind friends, routines, and familiar surroundings. Then dealing with racism at school adds another layer to the situation

New country, new school, family separation, and racism would be a lot for anyone, especially a child. I’m curious which of these experiences affects him the most as the story goes on

The timing of the story makes the family situation especially interesting. Moving from Hong Kong to California while the coronavirus is beginning would mean dealing with uncertainty on top of leaving behind a familiar home and being separated from family
- Floyd
That’s a lot for a child to process
- Florence
I think a lot of kids could relate to the feeling of being the new kid at school, even if their circumstances are different from Knox’s. Trying to figure out where you fit in while also dealing with people treating you differently can be really isolating

The part about the family being oceans apart from their dad caught my attention. Moving is already a big change for a child, but doing it during such an uncertain time must have made Knox feel like so much of his normal life had disappeared at once

Knox having to start over in a completely different place at ten years old sounds difficult enough without everything else happening at the same time. Being the new kid is already uncomfortable, and then having to deal with racism and being separated from his dad would make things even harder
- Daniel
Being the new kid is already difficult

To be honest with you that alone add everything else happening at the same time, and that’s a lot
- MAMA
I wonder how Knox felt going to a completely new school after everything that happened
- Sam
Should get this for my baby sis

The part about the family being separated really got my attention. I can imagine how confusing that would be for a child
- Daniella
Missing all those little family moments would be hard
- Maria Santos
Can you imagine moving back and leaving your dad behind? That must have been really hard for Knox
- Tough Guy
The dad being oceans away honestly stood out to me
