Jean C. O'Connor is a historical novelist and former high school English teacher of more than thirty years. Her novels The Remarkable Cause and Congress's Cryptographer tell the story of James Lovell, the Revolutionary War patriot and code-breaker who was her five-times great-grandfather. In 2023 she accepted Lovell’s induction into the National Security Agency’s Cryptologic Hall of Honor on his behalf, and in July 2026 she spoke at the National Cryptologic Museum for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Imprisoned in Boston’s Stone Jail and shipped to Halifax while his Loyalist father sails in the berth above, schoolteacher James Lovell holds on to the American cause. A historical novel built from Lovell’s own letters and the documents of his time.
