The Remarkable Cause follows James Lovell, a teacher at the Boston Latin School alongside his Tory father, Master John Lovell. Jailed for spying after Bunker Hill, he is forced aboard a ship bound for Halifax when General Howe evacuates Boston, and can only write letters and pray that General George Washington hears his appeal.
Jean C. O’Connor drew on letters, journals, and documents written by Lovell and his contemporaries, and illustrated the narrative with images from early newspapers.
